Three NYPD officers injured in meat cleaver attack

Three police officers were injured when a man attacked them with a meat cleaver in New York City on Thursday, CBS New York reported.

{mosads}The man, identified as 32-year-old Akram Joudeh, was eventually shot by police.

Two officers responding to a call in Midtown reportedly found a man trying to remove a boot from his car’s tire. When they confronted him, Joudeh allegedly pulled out an 11-inch meat cleaver and fled.

The two uniformed officers chased the man on foot and several other officers joined in. One off-duty detective who joined the chase suffered a 6-inch gash from his temple to his jaw when Joudeh allegedly struck him with the cleaver. The detective is listed as being in serious condition.

Two other officers had non-life threatening injuries.

Officers reportedly tried using a taser on the suspect to no effect.

The other officers then fired 18 shots at Joudeh, who was reported to be in critical condition.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton commended the officers on Twitter and told CBS that they made the right choice to shoot the suspect.

“Officers fired sufficient rounds to stop the attack,” he said. “Sufficient shots were fired to deter the attack on my officers.”
