McConnell: Trump’s hopes to get along with Russia ‘will be dashed pretty quickly’

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Sunday said he doesn’t think it’s unusual for an incoming president to want to get along with the Russians.

“My suspicion is these hopes will be dashed pretty quickly,” McConnell said in an interview on CBS’s “Face The Nation,” regarding Trump’s hopes to have a good relationship with Russia.

“The Russians are clearly a big adversary, and they demonstrated it by trying to mess around in our election.”

{mosads}McConnell said Trump is also filling his incoming administration with national security leaders who know Russians “are not our friends.”

He added that he accepts the intelligence community’s report regarding Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election. But he said the Russians were naive in thinking they’d be at an advantage if Trump was elected.

The president-elect tweeted on Saturday that having a good relationship with Russia is a “good thing.”

“Only ‘stupid’ people, or fools, would think that it is bad!” the president-elect tweeted. 

“We … have enough problems around the world without yet another one.”
