Russian prime minister: Obama’s mistakes ‘will be remembered by history’
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday blasted President Obama’s foreign policy decisions during his two terms in office, accusing the outgoing U.S. president of destroying bilateral relations with Russia.
“The Obama administration has destroyed relations between the United States and Russia, which are at their lowest point in decades,” Medvedev, who also served as president of Russia from 2008 to 2012, wrote in a Facebook post.
“This is its key foreign policy mistake which will be remembered by history,” he added.
{mosads}In his statement, the Russian prime minister briefly remarked on the areas of international cooperation between the two superpowers, praising mutual efforts to implement the Iranian nuclear deal and the elimination of chemical weapons in Syria.
Medvedev noted that Russian-American efforts in these areas led to outcomes that are “important for the entire world.”
However, Medvedev’s praise was short-lived, as the former Russian president expanded on his criticism of Obama’s second term in office.
“The Obama administration was completely short-sighted on such an important and complex issue as relations with Russia,” he wrote.
“It is important to remember that Russia-US relations, without exaggeration, determine the fate of major international initiatives … we must be aware of our common responsibility. This is something that the Obama administration failed to do,” Medvedev charged.
“We do not know yet how the new US administration will approach relations with our country. But we are hoping that reason will prevail. And we are ready to do our share of the work in order to improve the relationship,” Medvedev said.
