Trump revives program to use local police for immigration enforcement

President Trump is reviving a program that deputizes local officers so they can enforce federal immigration law, at Associated Press reported.

The program was announced the same day Trump declared plans to build a border wall with Mexico and hire thousands more federal agents.

In 2009, the program had given more than 60 police departments and sheriff agencies special authority, the AP said, but it was criticized by people who though it promoted racial profiling.

Since then, the number has been cut in half, after complaints that officers were focusing on minor violations instead of catching violence offenders.
