Trump: Dems ‘will make a deal’ on healthcare

President Trump predicted on Twitter Monday night that Democrats will ultimately ally with Republicans on healthcare once ObamaCare starts failing.

Trump also tweeted about the House Freedom Caucus, presumably referencing the conservative group’s role in blocking GOP leadership’s House bill for repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act last Friday.

{mosads}White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday that Trump is sincere about working with Democrats on healthcare reform.

“Starting Friday afternoon through late yesterday, [Trump] has received a number of calls, as well as other members of the senior staff that have been working on healthcare, from members of both sides saying that they would like to work together, offer up ideas and have suggestions about how to come to a resolution on this and get a House vote on this,” he said during his daily briefing.

Spicer criticized Democrats for avoiding the healthcare negotiating table before the stunning collapse of the GOP’s repeal-and-replace effort last week.

“Some of the Democrats who now say they were not involved early on in the process … they wanted nothing to do with the process, no way they would engage in any discussion of repeal,” he said. “I think it is a two-way street.”

Republicans abandoned their effort to repeal ObamaCare in a shocking defeat last Friday, pulling legislation that seemed headed for certain death on the House floor.

Trump asked Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to scrap the controversial measure after issuing an ultimatum that the lower chamber must vote on it and being told the bill could not pass. 

Freedom Caucus members fiercely opposed the American Health Care Act (AHCA) before Friday’s outcome, demanding a number of changes intended to lower healthcare premium costs.

Trump tweeted Sunday that the caucus and other conservative groups like the Club for Growth and Heritage Action for America had helped safeguard ObamaCare.

“Democrats are smiling in D.C. that the Freedom Caucus, with the help of Club for Growth and Heritage, have saved Planned Parenthood & OCare,” he tweeted.

The AHCA’s collapse was a major setback for Trump, Ryan and other GOP leaders who have long promised to repeal ObamaCare.
