Tim Scott honors victims on anniversary of Charleston church shooting

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott (R) memorialized the victims of the 2015 Charleston church shooting on Saturday, the two-year anniversary of the attack on a historic African-American church in Charleston, S.C., that left nine dead and three wounded.

Scott tweeted out the names of the “Emanuel 9,” named for the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church where the attack occurred, early Saturday morning.

Scott wrote in a follow-up message that “the killer wanted a race war. The families of the #Emanuel9 responded with love and righteousness. They showed us we are better together.”

Dylann Roof, 22, was sentenced to death in January for the hate-motivated murder of the nine black churchgoers. He appealed his conviction and death sentence last month.

Former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords (D) joined Scott in memorializing the victims on Twitter. Giffords left Congress after she was shot at a constituent event in 2011 by a man who killed six people and wounded more than a dozen others.

“Remembering the beautiful, innocent lives lost in the Mother Emanuel AME Church 2 years ago and thinking of the Charleston community today,” Giffords wrote on Twitter.

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill recalled Giffords’s shooting this week after a gunman opened fire at a Republican congressional baseball practice in Alexandra, Va., injuring four people, including two critically.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) remained in critical condition after multiple surgeries following the Wednesday shooting at the field in suburban Washington.
