Colbert tells Russia he is ‘considering a run for president in 2020’

Comedian Stephen Colbert appeared on a Russian talk show Friday night and announced that he is considering a run for president in 2020 and would welcome Russian help “in an unofficial capacity.”

“I am here to announce that I am considering a run for president in 2020, and I thought it would be better to cut out the middle man and just tell the Russians myself,” Colbert said on Evening Urgant, a popular late-night show hosted by Ivan Urgant that airs on state-run TV.

The joke refers to alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

“If anyone would like to work on my campaign, in an unofficial capacity, please just let me know,” he continued.

The “Late Show” host was playing a round of Russian roulette with shots of vodka at the time.

Colbert is in Russia taping for his own show, a CBS spokesperson confirmed to Variety

He tweeted to President Trump on Thursday that he would “bring you back a copy” of the alleged tapes of the president’s conversations with former FBI director James Comey “if they exist.”
Trump later denied that he has such tapes, despite first raising the possibility in an earlier tweet that kicked off a rush of official and unofficial requests to obtain them.

Colbert often parodies political action. He mock campaigned for the GOP nomination in the 2008 presidential election. He also founded his own superPac ahead of the 2012 election.
