Teachers union plans anti-DeVos protest in Denver
Teachers union members and public education and labor supporters are planning a protest of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos when she appears in Denver this week.
The Colorado Education Association is leading a Wednesday protest one day before DeVos will speak at the annual meeting of the conservative American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), The Denver Post reported.
{mosads}”Betsy DeVos will be in town plotting with ALEC to dismantle public institutions that support opportunity for Colorado students, educators and families,” a teacher and member of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association told The Post.
DeVos has long advocated for federal funding for alternatives to traditional public schools and giving parents a choice of schooling options if the nearby public schools are poor — an approach opponents say undermines public education.
She decried opponents of school choice in May, calling them “flat-earthers” and saying they have “chilled creativity.”
