Poll: Support for Trump impeachment grows to 40 percent
Forty percent of Americans polled support impeachment for President Trump, according to a new poll released Thursday, NBC News reported.
The poll, done by the Public Religion Research Institute, shows a 10-point jump from the same results in February. It was conducted Aug. 2-8, before the violent rally in Charlottesville, Va., and Trump’s controversial remarks about it this week.
The results also found that 56 percent of people polled have unfavorable ratings for the president, compared with 38 percent favorable reviews.
{mosads}The main growth in supporting impeachment comes from Democrats and independents, who jumped to supporting impeachment at 72 percent and 38 percent, respectively.
There is also a gender divide on impeachment views, with 32 percent of men supporting Trump impeachment compared with 47 percent of women, according to the poll.
The poll was conducted Aug. 2-8, surveying 2,024 Americans with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
A number of Democratic lawmakers have called for Trump’s impeachment including Rep. Gwen Moore (Wis.) on Tuesday. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) has suggested for months that Trump is unfit to serve as commander in chief. And earlier in the summer, Reps. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) and Al Green (D-Texas) introduced articles of impeachment against the president.
