Statue of Christopher Columbus found beheaded in New York

A resident of Yonkers, N.Y., found a Christopher Columbus statue beheaded in a local park, NBC New York reported Wednesday.

Pat Gamberdella told the network that he phoned authorities after discovering the headless statue. 

“It’s very upsetting that American values have sunken to the level they are today,” Gamberdella told NBC. “It’s unfortunate because I did go up there and I did see it all smashed.”

{mosads}Law enforcement is reportedly looking into the matter, which comes as Confederate monuments and statues are under renewed scrutiny following violence at a Charlottesville, Va., rally that left one counterprotester dead and numerous others injured.

The white nationalist rally, titled “Unite the Right,” was meant as a protest of the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

A statue of Columbus, an explorer who voyaged across the Atlantic Ocean for Spain in the 15th century, was smashed last week in Baltimore.

Another statue of Columbus, in New York City, has also come under consideration for removal by a commission appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) to review statues and monuments.
