Trump: Tax cuts more important than ever in hurricanes’ wake

President Trump pushed Congress to act on tax reform in a tweet Wednesday, saying tax cuts are needed “more than ever before” in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey.

“With Irma and Harvey devastation, Tax Cuts and Tax Reform is needed more than ever before. Go Congress, go!” Trump tweeted.

Congress has passed legislation providing aid for Harvey recovery efforts but has yet to address Irma, which dealt severe damage to communities on the Florida coast this week.

The two storms caused a combined $150-200 billion in damages, according to a preliminary estimate from Moody’s Analytics this week.

The White House is currently negotiating tax reform with GOP leaders in Congress, and it has pressed both Republicans and Democrats to work quickly on passing comprehensive tax reform ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

Trump has also signaled his willingness to work with Democrats in passing tax cuts, as he pushes for his first major legislative victory.

The president previously reached a deal with Democrats to fund the government for three months, raise the nation’s debt limit and provide emergency funds for Harvey relief.
