Maher on Trump Democratic outreach: ‘This isn’t being bipartisan this is being bipolar’

HBO’s Bill Maher called President Trump’s outreach to Democrats on immigration “bipolar … not bipartisan” on Friday.

“I mean, he thinks he’s being bipartisan. This isn’t being bipartisan, this is being bipolar,” Maher joked to kick off his opening monologue on HBO’s “Real Time.”

The satire comes as Trump negotiated with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi (R-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) twice in the past month, first on the debt ceiling and most recently on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“This week Trump wined and dined Schumer and Pelosi. Well, they dined — he whined,” Maher joked.

“The Dreamers can stay, and by that he means they can’t stay. Or maybe they can stay, ask somebody else,” said Maher, alluding to the confusion over where the president stands on immigration issues. “He wants them to stay. And by that he means, ‘get out.’ And we’re building a wall and by that he means we’re repairing the fence.

Maher also mocked the backlash displayed by some Trump supporters who burned their “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan hats in protest over the president negotiating with Pelosi and Schumer and appearing to break a key campaign promise on the border wall.

“It’s very scary,” observed Maher, “Because it means they’ve discovered fire. Tools could be next.”

Trump was slammed by several right-wing outlets and commentators throughout the week after agreeing to work with Schumer and Pelosi.

Breitbart News most notably used the hashtag “AmnestyDon,” which became a top trending topic on Twitter in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.

“Amnesty Don” is the headline of a Breitbart News story pounding the president for working with Democrats on the deal.
