McMaster: McCain criticism ‘hurt my feelings’

National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said Thursday that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) “hurt my feelings” by saying that the White House has not been transparent with Congress. 

McMaster’s comments came after McCain, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, complained that the Trump administration was being less transparent with Congress than the Obama administration had been. 

In his own remarks, McMaster said that he “loves” the senator.

McCain, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee previously said Thursday that “it might require a subpoena” to get the White House to provide details on the U.S. military operations taking place in Niger, following the death of U.S. soldiers there. 

The White House has yet to release information on the U.S. operations in the northwestern African country, after four U.S. Army Green Berets were killed by a much larger force of fighters affiliated with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria group.

The senator told The Hill that the White House had not been forthcoming with information on the attack. 

The Republican, who is a veteran, said that it was the job of his Senate committee to know the full details of all affairs of U.S. military forces. “We should be informed at all times,” he said.
