NYC terror suspect makes first court appearance
Terror suspect Sayfullo Saipov on Wednesday appeared for the first time in court after allegedly plowing his truck into pedestrians and bicyclists in New York earlier this week.
Saipov, a Uzbek national, appeared in a wheelchair, facing Magistrate Judge Barbara Moses, who read him his rights, media reports said.
{mosads}His legs and feet reportedly remained shackled throughout the 10-minute-long appearance as he answered yes or no questions through a Russian interpreter, according to The New York Post.
Federal defender David Patton, representing Saipov, said he will likely be brought to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn or the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, according to the report.
He is charged with providing material support and resources to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
The court case comes after Saipov allegedly drove a truck into a crowd in lower Manhattan in an attack that left eight dead and a dozen others injured.
A police officer shot him and took him into custody.
Saipov entered the United States in 2010 through a lottery system, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
President Trump has since seized on the terror-related attack to renew his push for a further crackdown on immigration and stronger security measures.
“We have to get much tougher. We have to get much smarter. And we have to get much less politically correct,” Trump said Wednesday. The day before, he advocated for a tougher vetting program for would-be immigrants.
