NJ official who mocked Women’s March defeated by candidate he inspired to run

A Republican New Jersey official who posted a meme mocking the Women’s March was defeated in an election last night by a woman who was inspired by his remarks to run for office, The Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Democrat Ashley Bennet defeated Republican John Carman Tuesday for the Atlantic County freeholder seat, according to the AP.

Carman posted a meme on the day of the Women’s March that featured a woman in a kitchen and the message, “Will the women’s protest be over in time for them to cook dinner?”

“Just asking?” he wrote alongside the meme.

{mosads}Carman later apologized, but first-time candidate Bennet decided to challenge him for the seat after being angered by the image.

Carman attended President Trump’s inauguration in January, Philly.com reported, which took place just one day before the march. He has also received criticism for wearing a patch with the Confederate flag.

The win was just one of many for Democrats on Tuesday, which included Democratic wins in gubernatorial races in both New Jersey and Virginia.
