Schumer: Trump has mastered ‘the art of failure’
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer says instead of living out “the art of the deal,” negotiating with President Trump is more like “the art of failure.”
The New York Democrat described what he said was his first-hand experience trying to broker pacts with the former real estate mogul in a Monday appearance on CBS’s “The Late Show.”
“He has two ways of negotiating,” Schumer, 67, told host Stephen Colbert of “The Art of the Deal” author. “He’ll shake your hand, and then the next day totally back off.”
After meeting with Trump in September, Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced in a joint statement after the dinner gathering that the trio had struck a deal on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. But Trump tweeted the following morning that “no deal was made” regarding DACA.
No deal was made last night on DACA. Massive border security would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent. Would be subject to vote.

“Nancy Pelosi and I, at the White House, had an agreement with him on ‘Dreamers’ for border security,” Schumer said Monday, referring to certain young immigrants brought to the country illegally as children. “He agreed, and the next day got pressure from this hard right, he totally backed off.”{mosads}
“His other way of negotiating,” Schumer continued of Trump, “is saying, ‘Here’s how I want it. You do it my way — or else.’”
“He wasn’t a very good negotiator in real estate deals in New York,” Schumer, in his first “Late Show” appearance, told Colbert, who’s aggressively criticized Trump on his program. “And the reason his administration has been such a failure so far, one of the many reasons, is he’s a poor negotiator because he uses only one of those two tactics.”
