Katie Couric returns to NBC to co-host Olympics opening ceremony

Former “Today” show host Katie Couric is returning to NBC for one night to co-host the opening ceremony for the Pyeongchang Olympics on Feb. 9, the network announced Wednesday.

Couric, 61, worked for NBC News from 1989 until 2006 and served as NBC’s “Today” show co-host starting in 1991. She jumped to CBS News from NBC but left that network in 2011.

The now-former “CBS Evening News” anchor will co-host the opening ceremony with former ESPN announcer Mike Tirico, who joined NBC in 2016.

Couric last co-hosted the opening ceremonies for NBC with Bob Costas in Athens, Greece, in 2004.

Couric has returned to the network before, last in January 2017 to co-host “Today” while regular host Savannah Guthrie was on maternity leave.

The announcement comes days after Couric told People magazine in an interview that she found allegations about former co-host Matt Lauer’s actions while he was at the “Today” show “disturbing and distressing.”

“The whole thing has been very painful for me,” Couric said, following allegations of sexual misconduct against Lauer. “The accounts I’ve read and heard have been disturbing, distressing and disorienting and it’s completely unacceptable that any woman at the ‘Today’ show experienced this kind of treatment.”

Couric co-hosted with Lauer on “Today” from 1997 to 2006.

Terms of Couric’s compensation for the return appearance were not disclosed at a media event on Wednesday.
