Olympic organizers confirm cyber attack

The organizers of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, said Sunday that a cyber attack took place during the opening ceremonies Friday. 

“We are not going to comment on the issue. It is one we are dealing with. We are making sure our systems are secure and they are secure,” International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams said, according to Reuters. 

{mosads}“Maintaining secure operations is our purpose,” he said. 

Adams said he did not know who perpetrated the attack, adding “best international practice says that you don’t talk about an attack,” Reuters reported.

The winter games are taking place roughly 50 miles from the North Korean border and come amid heightened tensions between Pyongyang and the global community.

However, North Korea’s relationship with South Korea improved ahead of the games, with the two nations forming a combined team to compete.  

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister Kim Yo Jong is attending the games, making her the first member of the ruling dynasty to set foot in the South since the Korean War.
