Sessions’ draft strategic plan for DOJ cracks down on undocumented immigrants, leaks: report

A leaked draft of the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) multi-year strategic plan shows that the agency will shift its focus away from Obama-era priorities toward a more conservative agenda, such as cracking down on undocumented immigrants and leaks, HuffPost reported Thursday.

The draft of the five-year strategic plan, a copy of which was obtained by the news outlet, lays out the priorities for the DOJ under Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The four main goals in the plan are reducing instances of violence crime, upping immigration enforcement and securing border, counterterrorism and promoting “integrity, good government and the rule of law,” according to HuffPost.

“The Department’s 5-year strategic plan is not final until the Attorney General signs it. As he has not yet done so, we cannot comment on unofficial documents that we have not seen or reviewed and are not in final form,” Justice Department spokesman Ian Prior told HuffPost.

“That said, the Attorney General has made clear that his goals are to protect our national security, reduce violent crime, combat the deadly opioid crisis, enforce our immigration laws, and restore the rule of law,” he continued.

The draft calls to end all so-called sanctuary politics, as well as prioritize criminal immigration enforcement and denaturalize any citizens who obtained fraudulently obtained citizenship.

The Justice Department sued California this week over its sanctuary laws.

The plan also names MS-13, a violent gang targeted by the Trump administration, in its statements on cracking down on violent crime.

And the document also calls to prepare DOJ staffers to oppose internal threats who “selectively leak classified information” to “advance their personal agendas” and to “aggressively investigate” any leaks of classified information, according to HuffPost.

However, HuffPost noted that the draft plan does not include measures prioritizing civil rights and criminal justice reform, breaking with goals laid out in the strategic plan for the Obama-era DOJ.
