Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said in a new interview that “everything is on the table” in regards to the White House’s recent proposal on gun violence and school safety.
“The plan is really the first step in a more lengthy process,” DeVos told NBC’s “Today” show.
DeVos said a presidential commission on school safety that she will lead will be looking at various issues within the debate.
{mosads}The Education secretary’s comment come after the White House on Sunday released a set of proposals following the deadly high school shooting in South Florida. One of those proposals is for states to provide school employees with firearm training.
The administration is not pushing for universal background checks or raising the age requirement to purchase certain weapons, including the AR-15.
President Trump previously backed raising the age requirement following the shooting in Parkland, Fla., which the suspect allegedly carried out using a legally purchased AR-15.
DeVos on Monday morning called for a “broader” approach to the debate following the recent massacre.
“There are many things that have driven this issue in the first place and we have to go back to the beginning and talk about how these violent acts are even occurring,” DeVos said.
Her interview follows remarks by Trump at a campaign rally on Saturday in Pennsylvania, where he blasted commissions.
“We can’t just keep setting up blue ribbon committees with your wife and your wife and your husband, and they meet and they have a meal and they talk,” he said.
