Boston students show up on school snow day to protest gun violence

Students in Boston marched from the city’s Park Street Station to the state house in protest of gun violence, participating in the national walkout despite their schools being closed for inclement weather.

On Wednesday, students nationwide participated in the walkout to mark one month since 17 people were killed and more than a dozen others were injured in a mass shooting at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Students planned to hold anti-gun violence marches, protests and a 17-minute walkout or moment of silence in honor of the victims.

Many Boston schools were closed Wednesday for the area’s second consecutive snow day, and fifth of the year. Footage of the march taken by Boston CBS affiliate WBZ 4 shows large numbers of students walking along snow-covered streets.

{mosads}Charlotte Lowell, the student organizer of the Massachusetts walkout, told Boston.com on Tuesday that the cancellations would not affect area students’ participation.

“This movement is not dissuaded by a snowstorm,” Lowell said. “We’re hardy Massachusetts students, and we’ll brave the snow in order to speak out about what matters to us.”

Lowell told Boston.com that students were planning to meet with state lawmakers to push for a gun control measure that would make it easier to take guns away from dangerous individuals.
