Trauma surgeon calls for end to gun violence after YouTube shooting

A trauma surgeon who helped treat victims of the shooting at YouTube headquarters on Tuesday is calling for the end of the epidemic of gun violence in the U.S.

Andre Campbell said at a press conference that “this is a terrible day in the United States,” and that everyday gun violence in the country needs to be addressed, CNN reported.

“To think that after we’ve seen Las Vegas, Parkland, the Pulse nightclub shooting, that we would see an end to this, but we have not,” said Campbell, a surgeon at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

He also criticized the media for focusing on mass shootings instead of covering the daily gun violence that takes place across the country.

“Gun violence happens every day throughout the United States. It happens here in San Francisco. It happens in the Bay Area. It happens all over the country,” Campbell said. “But I don’t see you guys out here because I’d like to make sure that people know that we got a serious problem that we need to address.”

“I don’t have all the answers … at least we’re having a discussion about it nationally I think which is a good thing. But this is a real problem,” he added.

“That’s the problem, when something like this happens, which is terribly unfortunate, then you guys come out,” Campbell said. “The reality is we have to deal with this all the time. We have to deal with the families.”

Three people were injured in the shooting at YouTube headquarters. The alleged female shooter was found dead on the scene with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A national debate on gun control emerged in the weeks after the mass shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February that left 17 people dead.
