McCarthy joins Trump at private dinner
President Trump dined Wednesday night with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and other supporters, the White House said.
Deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters said Trump and McCarthy attended a private dinner at the City Center complex in Washington, D.C.
The president’s daily schedule previously indicated Trump would spend Wednesday night at a private dinner. However, the attendees were not previously known.
{mosads}McCarthy joined Trump a day after multiple reports indicated the two are discussing ways to cut some of the funding in the recently passed $1.3 trillion omnibus bill.
The move comes after conservatives criticized the bill for including the largest federal spending increase in years, despite Republican pledges to show financial restraint.
In order for the spending to be slashed, Congress would need to sign off on the request, which could be a challenge for Trump.
McCarthy has developed a strong relationship with Trump, though he reportedly disparaged the president during a closed-door meeting in 2016.
