Rouhani rips Trump: US ‘has never adhered to its commitments’

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday ripped President Trump’s announcement that the U.S. is leaving the Iran nuclear deal, saying America “has never adhered to its commitments.”

After Trump’s speech from the White House, Rouhani confirmed Iran would stay in the deal with the other nations involved.

“We can clearly see which country is not respecting the international commitments,” Rouhani said during a televised speech in Tehran.

“Iran is a country that adheres to its commitments. And the U.S. is a country that has never adhered to its commitments,” Rouhani added. “Our history in the past 40 years, and even prior to that, told us and has indicated that the Americans, speaking of their approach toward the people of the region and the people of Iran, have always adopted a hostile approach.”

Iranian state television said that Trump’s decision to withdraw from the agreement was “illegal, illegitimate and undermines international agreements,” Reuters reported.

The Iranian president also announced that Tehran is prepared to increase uranium enrichment to industrial levels, should the deal collapse entirely.

“This was a horrible one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made,” Trump said. “It didn’t bring calm, it didn’t bring peace, and it never will.”

His decision went against the wishes of European allies who were also a part of the deal, and who have said they are committed to staying in it.

With the U.S. out of the deal, it is unclear if the remaining nations will be able to salvage the agreement.
