Bill Clinton: It’s possible foreign countries tampered with election results

Former President Bill Clinton says it’s possible a foreign nation tampered with the results of the 2016 presidential election, saying he doesn’t know for sure.

“We’ve got a real serious problem about this cyber terrorism,” Clinton said in an interview clip with CBS released Friday. “They could go way beyond fixing the elections and those problems will happen faster if we allow our elections to continue to be tampered with by others.”

{mosads}Asked if he believed there had been “tampering in 2016 with results” of the presidential election, Clinton repeatedly responded: “I don’t know.”

The remarks arrive just weeks after leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee said they agree with the intelligence community’s assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election and sought to help President Trump win the White House.

There is no consensus on whether the interference influenced the result of the election.

As part of the committee’s investigation into Russian meddling, the committee has been reviewing the January 2017 assessment compiled by top U.S. intelligence officials.

According to that assessment, Russia sought to interfere in the election for three reasons: to undermine U.S. democracy, to damage Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and to help Trump win the White House.

U.S. security officials also testified last June that the Russian government targeted voting systems in 21 states in efforts to undermine the elections.

In a another clip from his CBS interview released Thursday, Clinton also disputed Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s (D-N.Y.) argument that he should have stepped down after his should have stepped down after his extramarital relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky went public.

“You have to … really ignore what the context was,” Clinton said. “But, you know, she’s living in a different context. And she did it for different reasons. So, I — but I just disagree with her.”

The former president’s full interview is scheduled to air Sunday.
