Former Eagles player hits back at Trump uninviting team to White House: ‘So many lies’

Former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Torrey Smith hit back at President Trump after he uninvited the team to the White House over the NFL anthem protests.

In a statement Monday, the White House said that the Super Bowl champions were “unable” to attend with the full team because some players “disagree with their President” about standing during the national anthem.{mosads}

Smith tweeted a response to the statement, saying it had “so many lies.”

“Not many people were going to go,” Smith tweeted. “No one refused to go simply because Trump ‘insists’ folks stand for the anthem.”

Trump’s statement said that the Eagles “wanted to send a smaller delegation,” but that fans “deserve better.” The White House plans to hold an event just for the fans.

In a second tweet, Smith said that the players on the team who wanted to attend the ceremony should have still been welcomed, and that disinviting the team was “cowardly.”

The White House said that they will “loudly and proudly” play the national anthem at the fan event.
