Washington Nationals pay tribute to Charles Krauthammer

The Washington Nationals on Thursday paid tribute to Charles Krauthammer by pausing for a moment of silence to honor the late conservative commentator at the team’s home stadium in Washington, D.C.

The team also paid tribute to Krauthammer, an avid Nationals fan, in a tweet.

“One of baseball’s greatest fans — Charles Krauthammer — passed away today after a long battle with cancer. He was loved and admired by many and will be truly missed here at Nationals Park,” the team said.

Krauthammer died on Thursday at the age of 68 after a battle with cancer.

He was a columnist for The Washington Post, where he won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary writing and served as a commentator on Fox News, where he was nightly staple on “Special Report with Bret Baier” for more than a decade.

“Charles wrote for the right reasons. Lord knows — and presidents, from right to left, can attest — he didn’t seek invitations to White House dinners or other badges of approval from the powerful. He sought, rather, to provoke us to think, to enlarge our understanding, at times to make us laugh,” the Post’s editorial board wrote.

“A gifted doctor and brilliant political commentator, Charles was a guiding voice throughout his time with FOX News and we were incredibly fortunate to showcase his extraordinary talent on our programs. He was an inspiration to all of us and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife Robyn and his son Daniel,” Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott said in a statement.

Krauthammer was a regular guest on Fox’s “Special Report,” but had had not been on the network since last August after undergoing surgery.

A chair at the show’s anchor desk in Washington was left empty in his honor on Thursday.
