Abortion rights activist Liz Plank says the latest controversy surrounding abortion is overdue.
“We haven’t had a very significant debate about abortion in a few years, and even since then, things have changed significantly and we’ve moved ahead,” Plank told “Rising” co-host Krystal Ball.
She argued that only a minority of voters back efforts by the Trump administration to limit access to birth control and abortion.
“We just cannot allow a certain people — a minority of Americans — to set the tone for this debate,” she said.
A new Quinnipiac University poll found that a majority of Americans are actually in favor of Roe v. Wade. Out of more than 1,000 of those surveyed, 63 percent of respondents agree with the court’s decision, compared with 31 percent who say they don’t.
The future of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion is at the center of the debate over who will replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Kennedy reaffirmed Roe v. Wade in a 1992 decision, and his vote helped strike down Texas’s abortion law H.B. 2, which would have shuttered most abortion clinics in the state.
