McCain’s body arrives at Phoenix-area mortuary to cheers of ‘I love you, John’

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who died Saturday, was greeted by applause from a crowd of Arizonans as his body arrived at a mortuary near Phoenix. 

The crowd could be heard shouting “I love you, John,” as the senator’s body was taken to the mortuary.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle showered McCain with praise for his decades of service both in the military and in politics.

McCain was tortured for years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, where he refused preferential release because he did not want to leave his fellow prisoners of war behind.

McCain went on to become a “maverick” of the Republican Party and longtime giant of the Senate over his decades-long career.

McCain died at age 81 after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer. 

He will lie in state in the Capital Rotunda in Washington, D.C., and receive a full dress funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral, according to The New York Times.

Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush have been asked to give eulogies at his eventual funeral. Vice President Pence has also been asked to attend, though President Trump has not.
