Sunday shows preview: Trump sells U.N. reorganizing and Kavanaugh allegations dominate
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley both will hit the Sunday news shows circuit this weekend in anticipation of the U.N. General Assembly in New York this week.
{mosads}President Donald Trump released a video via Twitter this Saturday in anticipation of the event, noting the “tremendous potential” of the organization.
Trump is slated to speak Monday at an event about world drug issues and address the General Assembly at the official opening Tuesday. After that he is set to lead a Security Council meeting on Wednesday focusing on Iran and broader efforts to limit nuclear proliferation.
Trump will also meet with leaders from South Korea, Egypt, France, Israel, Japan and the United Kingdom throughout the week.
Pompeo will appear on both “Fox News Sunday” and NBC’s “Meet the Press.” This will be Pompeo’s first general assembly meeting since replacing Rex Tillerson as secretary in April.
Pompeo previously focused his interactions with the U.N. on efforts toward North Korean denuclearization.
“The countries of the Security Council are united on the need for final, fully verified denuclearization of North Korea, as agreed to by Chairman Kim,” he urged in July at the U.N.
Haley will appear on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” Haley has been instrumental in coordinating U.S.-U.N. relations when the State Department has experienced turnover.
Allegations from Christine Blasey Ford that Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a party while the two were in high school in the 1980s will also be heavily featured in discussions.
Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Ca.), who passed the letter detailing allegations to Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Ca.), will also appear on “Face the Nation.”
