Facebook discovers new Iranian disinformation accounts: report

Facebook has discovered Iranian disinformation activity on its platform and is working to reduce its impact, reports Reuters.

The company reportedly plans to reveal the news to reporters on Friday, potentially during a press call it has scheduled with its chief of security, Nathaniel Gleicher.

Facebook, along with Twitter and Google, in August removed hundreds of accounts linked to Iranian misinformation campaign efforts.

{mosads}The company through a tip from the cybersecurity firm FireEye discovered a batch of account tied to the Iranian Liberty Front Press, which was pushing political content to U.S. and global audiences without clearly specifying its links to Iran.

At the time, Facebook also announced that it had deleted a batch of accounts linked to new Russian misinformation efforts.

Over the summer, Facebook also announced that it had discovered a group of inauthentic accounts attempting to influence U.S. political discourse. The accounts, whose origins are not yet clear, collaborated with actual, unwitting American activists to organize real life protests.
