Cindy McCain takes aim at Trump: We need a strong leader, ‘not a negative Nancy’

Cindy McCain, the wife of the late Arizona Sen. John McCain (R), took aim at President Trump in a recent interview, saying “the country needs a strong leader, not a negative Nancy.” 

In an interview with CBS News released on Friday, McCain said she hopes the president will reflect on the level of political discourse seen in last week’s midterm elections and learn the country needs “a White House that’s strong.”

“It’s very humbling to lose and I hope he learns from it,” she said. “We need our president. We need a White House that’s strong.

{mosads}“We need a White House that’s not sparring with each other,” she continued. “And right now, I think we’re — things are in disarray, and I would hope through this that he does learn.”

McCain said her husband would have wanted Trump and other leaders in Washington “to go back to a country that was lovingly respected around the world, even in times of difficulty.”

McCain told the news agency she “saw an elective process this year unlike anything I’ve ever seen. And I think many people would say that.”

“The level of discourse, especially in my home state, that took place was abominable,” she continued, saying her husband “would’ve said ‘Enough. This is not only wrong but it’s bad for the country.’ ”
