Biden holds slim 1 point lead over Trump in new national poll

President Biden holds a slim 1 point lead over former President Trump in a hypothetical head-to-head match-up ahead of the 2024 presidential election. 

In a Quinnipiac University poll published Wednesday, 47 percent of registered respondents said they would vote for Biden, while 46 percent of respondents said they would cast their vote for Trump. 

By age group, 55 percent of respondents between the ages of 18 and 34 said they would support Biden, while 51 percent of respondents 65 years of age or older said they would vote for Trump.

Forty-one percent of respondents have a favorable opinion of Trump, while 54 percent of those surveyed have an unfavorable opinion of the former president, according to the poll. 

In contrast, 54 percent of respondents said that they have an unfavorable opinion of Biden, as 39 percent of those surveyed think differently of Biden. 

The new poll comes as Trump, 76, is still seen as the leading front-runner in the GOP presidential primary field amid the pile of legal battles he faces. 

Trump, along with 18 co-defendants, was indicted last month by a Georgia grand jury on charges tied to efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The former president, who announced his third White House bid last November, has faced three other indictments this year related to to his business dealings, handling of classified documents and actions following the 2020 election. 

Biden announced plans earlier this year to run for reelection in 2024, following weeks of speculation. Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 election. 

The Quinnipiac University Poll was conducted Sept. 7-11 with a total of 1,726 respondents participating in the survey. The poll’s margin of error was 2.4 percentage points.
