Pollster says midterms made voters more positive about 2018

Pollster Mallory Newall said in an interview that aired Monday on “What America’s Thinking” that voters felt positively about 2018 in part because of the outcome of the midterms.

“[In] 2018, there were some good things, right? Unemployment is very low right now, we had record-setting turnout in the midterm elections, a record number of women being elected to Congress,” Newall, research director at Ipsos Public Affairs, told Hill.TV’s Joe Concha.

“People are starting to see that their elected officials, they’re excited about them, they look more like them,” she continued. “So I don’t think 2018 was necessarily all bad.”

The midterms saw a record number of minorities elected to public office, as well as a Democratic takeover of the House.

Newall’s comments come after a recent Ipsos poll showed that 75 percent of Americans surveyed said 2018 was a good year for them, while 25 percent said it was a bad year for them.

Sixty-eight percent of respondents said in the same poll last year that 2017 was a good year for them.
