Ocasio-Cortez says she wore all white to swearing-in to honor suffragette movement
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said she wore all white to her swearing-in ceremony on Thursday to honor the women’s suffragette movement.
{mosads}In a tweet, the rising political star said she “wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the mothers of the movement.”
“I wore all-white today to honor the women who paved the path before me, and for all the women yet to come,” the freshman lawmaker wrote on Twitter. “From suffragettes to Shirley Chisholm, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the mothers of the movement.”

Ocasio-Cortez was responding to a tweet that pointed out how Chisholm (D-N.Y.), the first black woman to be elected to Congress in 1968., also wore white when she was sworn in.
“Geraldine Ferraro wore all white when she accepted the VP nomination,” Twitter user Amanda Litman wrote. “Hillary Clinton wore all white to accept the Democratic nomination in 2016. And today, @AOC is wearing all white. History!!”
Ocasio-Cortez, a 29-year-old progressive from the Bronx, is the youngest female lawmaker elected to Congress.
She made national headlines in June after ousting longtime Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.), a 10-term incumbent who served as the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, in a stunning victory during the Democratic primary.
Members of the GOP booed Ocasio-Cortez on the House floor on Thursday when she voted for newly-elected Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)
“Over 200 members voted for Nancy Pelosi today, yet the GOP only booed one: me,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “Don’t hate me cause you ain’t me, fellas.”
