Greene: US in ‘serious weakened position’ amid Speakership fight, Israel conflict

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Sunday characterized the U.S. as being in a “serious weakened position” given a vacancy in the Speakership while Israel formally declared war following an unprecedented coordinated attack by Hamas the day before.

Fox News’s Maria Bartiromo asked Greene on “Sunday Morning Futures” whether the Speakership election will be “expedited” in the wake of the deadly attacks launched by Palestinian militants on Israel.

“Yes, absolutely,” Greene said. “We’re in a serious weakened position. Republicans that control the majority in the House of Representatives — I want to remind everyone that we barely control the majority of the House and that’s only one-third of the federal government. 

“What happened last week, I completely disagree with it, was eight Republicans joining with all the Democrats in the House and basically throwing the gavel on the floor and saying it’s now up for grabs [for] anyone that wants it. This is not a serious thing to do when you control the House of Representatives,” she added. 

House Republicans are in search for a new leader since former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was booted from the top spot last week. McCarthy has said that he will not seek the Speakership again, while two lawmakers — Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) — announced they will pursue the job.

Greene would not reveal which candidate she would endorse before getting answers on certain legislation, including one that would ban gender-affirming surgeries for children. She also wants to see about ending aid to Ukraine amid its fight against Russia’s invasion.

“I want to hear our Speaker candidates answer these questions. And that’s the right thing for me to do. I demand answers. I represent my district, and whoever wants to be Speaker needs to be able to answer how they’ll handle those particular issues,” she said.
