Jill Biden, Sara Netanyahu exchange letters amid war between Israel, Hamas

First lady Jill Biden and Sara Netanyahu, the wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, exchanged letters amid the war between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s office released copies of the letters and said they were “personal and moving.”

“Like so many Americans, I am deeply concerned for the people of Israel in the face of this unconscionable terrorist attack,” Biden wrote. “Our resolve is clear — even though our hearts are broken.”

“We stand with the state of Israel and its people, always,” she concluded in her letter. “You and Bibi are in my prayers.”

In her response on Friday, Netanyahu called the first lady’s letter “a ray of light” during a disheartening time. She said Biden’s words also warmed her broken heart.

Netanyahu said she and her husband, commonly referred to as Bibi, appreciate the support of the United States.

“You are a true friend. Bibi and I appreciate that and the unwavering support you and Joe have shown us. Today and always,” Netanyahu’s letter said. “At the moment, we share a broken heart, but Israel’s resolve will see us emerge victorious in this war of good over unspeakable evil.”

“We have no other choice,” she added. “Thank you for your prayers.”

The exchange of letters came after Israel declared war on the Palestinian militant group Hamas — after the group, which controls the Gaza Strip, launched a surprise attack on Israel last weekend.

President Biden on Friday said the group is worse than al Qaeda, the organization behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

“The more we learned about the attack, the more horrifying it becomes,” he said during an event in Philadelphia. “More than 1,000 — 1,000 innocent lives lost, including at least 27 Americans. These guys make, they make al Qaeda look pure. They’re pure evil.”

“The United States, make no mistake about it, stands with Israel,” he added.

The ongoing conflict so far has reportedly cost more than 2,800 lives on both sides.
