Jeff Bezos says he’s leaving Seattle for Miami

Jeff Bezos announced Thursday that he is leaving Seattle and moving with his girlfriend and parents to Miami.

The Amazon founder said he would be moving after spending nearly 30 years in Seattle in order to be closer to his parents and operations of his space manufacturing company Blue Origin.

“I’ve lived in Seattle longer than I’ve lived anywhere else and have so many amazing memories here,” Bezos said in an Instagram post. “As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me. Seattle, you will always have a piece of my heart.”

Bezos began his Amazon company from the garage of his Seattle home in 1994. Since then, it’s become one of the most successful U.S. companies in history, and Bezos has become one of the world’s wealthiest and most powerful people.

In the Instagram post announcing his move, Bezos shared video of his garage setup from 1994, with his dad behind the camera.

“My parents have always been my biggest supporters. They recently moved back to Miami, the place we lived when I was younger,” Bezos said in an Instagram post. “I want to be close to my parents, and Lauren and I love Miami.”

Bezos appears to be making the move to spend more time with his family, though he said his space company’s operations “are increasingly shifting to Cape Canaveral.” Bezos did not say if the Amazon headquarters would be relocating with him, but it is likely to remain in Seattle.

Bezos’s move means he will be joining a trend of tech migration. In the past year, several tech companies and leaders have relocated to Florida either for personal or business reasons.
