Nike releases limited-edition Kaepernick jersey after player settles collusion case with NFL
Nike has released a limited-edition Colin Kaepernick jersey this week following the player’s settlement with the NFL over a collusion grievance.
The Kaepernick Icon Jersey, which sells for $150, features the player’s number, 7, on a black jersey.
The Nike website describes the jersey as “a celebration of those who seek truth in their communities, and those who remain true to themselves.”
{mosads}Nike spokeswoman Sandra Carreon-John told USA Today that the jersey “marks Nike’s continued product collaboration with Colin.”
“We believe Colin Kaepernick is one of the most inspirational athletes of this generation, who has leveraged the power of sport to help move the world forward,” she said.
Kaepernick became the face of Nike’s 30th anniversary “Just Do It” campaign in September, sparking backlash from people who opposed NFL players like Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial inequality and police brutality.
Kaepernick popularized the protests as a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers during the 2016 season. He later became a free agent, and later filed a formal grievance accusing the NFL of freezing him out of the league.
The NFL settled grievances with Kaepernick and his former teammate Eric Reid for an undisclosed sum last week.
