White House announces new ‘holiday ice rink’ set for the South Lawn
The White House is planning an icy addition just in time for the holidays, with an ice rink going up on the South Lawn.
Jill Biden will “unveil the 2023 White House Holiday Ice Rink” on Wednesday, the first lady’s press office said in a Monday night announcement.
But the trail to gather more info about the frosty feature at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. has gone cold. When ITK asked for more info on the potential ice skating destination, a White House official appeared to skate around the inquiry, saying that more details were coming.
It wouldn’t be the first time that figure skating would be front and center at the White House.
In 1980, an ice stage was erected on the South Lawn for a holiday party held by then-President Jimmy Carter, according to the White House Historical Association. Olympic figure skater Peggy Fleming performed at the frosty festivities.
The announcement of the ice rink came on the same day that Jill Biden revealed this year’s White House holiday theme: “Magic, Wonder, and Joy.”
As part of the debut of the holiday décor, Biden hosted a reception on Monday for military families featuring the cast of the North American tour of the Broadway show “Frozen.”
