Jake Tapper’s daughter pens children’s book encouraging young girls to raise their hands

The 11-year-old daughter of CNN host Jake Tapper wrote a children’s book encouraging young girls to speak up and raise their hands in class.

The journalist announced on Twitter on Friday, which was International Women’s Day, that his daughter, Alice, wrote the book to be released later this month.

{mosads}The 32-page illustrated book depicts her story and encourages her young readers “to follow Alice’s lead and raise their hand,” according to publisher Penguin House.

The student first noticed that “girls weren’t raising their hands in class with the same confidence that boys were,” Tapper wrote.

In 2016, my daughter Alice noticed girls weren’t raising their hands in class with the same confidence that boys were. She talked about it with her mom/my wife, her @girlscouts troop, the head of local Girl Scouts @GSCNC and came up with an idea for a RAISE YOUR HAND patch.

After speaking with her mom and her local Girl Scout troop, Alice created a “Raise Your Hand” patch, which girls could earn after pledging to raise their hands more in class and recruiting others to do the same. The patch was put into circulation nationwide in October 2017.

The young activist, who is named after the American suffragist Alice Paul, later penned an op-ed for The New York Times.

“I tell girls that we should take the risk and try anyway, just like the boys do,” she wrote. “If the answer is wrong, it’s not the end of the world. It’s not like answering a trivia question to win a million dollars on live TV.”

Tapper wrote that Penguin House reached out to the family after reading the op-ed.

Alice is donating all proceeds from the book to the Girl Scouts.

Oprah Winfrey heard about the 11-year-old’s mission and wrote a matching check to be donated to the Girl Scouts, Tapper wrote.

“Raise Your Hand,” illustrated by Marta Kissi, is set to be released March 26.
