Dozens hurt on turbulent flight to NYC

Dozens of people on a Turkish Airlines flight suffered minor injuries on Saturday after the plane encountered severe turbulence en route to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) said on social media that at least 29 people suffered bumps, bruises and cuts when the plane encountered severe turbulence about 45 minutes before landing.

All of those injured were taken to area hospitals for treatment, USA Today reported.

The newspaper reported that the Turkish Airlines incident came the same day that a flight headed from Montreal to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport because of smoke on the plane.

Crews did not find a fire, and the cause of the smoke is still under investigation. Two passengers suffered injuries unrelated to the smoke, USA Today reported.
