Trump named co-champion of golf club contest he didn’t play in: report

President Trump has reportedly been named a winner of a 2018 golf championship held at one of his clubs — even though he never actually competed in the event.

Golf.com reports Trump won the right to put the champion’s plaque on his locker at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida after wagering a nine-hole challenge to actual winner Ted Virtue, who took him up on his offer and ultimately lost.

{mosads}Trump reportedly offered the nine-hold challenge to Virtue after saying something like “the only reason you won is because I couldn’t play” due to time commitments as president.

Trump beat Virtue in the one-on-one competition, but agreed to be co-champions with him.

“This isn’t fair — we’ll be co-champions,” Trump said, according to Golf.com.

The 2018 champion’s plaque marks the sixth on Trump’s locker, joining victories from the 1999, 2001 and 2009 tournaments. He is also listed as the senior champion from 2012 and 2013.

Trump is known as an avid golfer who loves to play on his own courses, including in Florida, Virginia and New Jersey. He passed control and ownership of his multiple golf clubs and resorts to his adult sons when he became president. 

The Trump Organization, which owns and operates the course, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.

Club employees told Golf.com they could not discuss club matters.
