Fiscal responsibility advocate Bob Bixby on Tuesday told Hill.TV that President Trump’s proposed 2020 budget is “unrealistic.”
“I think the mix here of policies is unrealistic,” Bixby, the executive director of the Concord Coalition, told hosts Buck Sexton and Krystal Ball on “Rising.”
“I would say we probably need to have something more on the revenue side, and maybe some more realistic spending targets,” he continued.
The Concord Coalition is a nonpartisan organization that calls for fiscal responsibility in the government.
The budget, which was unveiled on Monday, will most likely not make it through the Democratic-controlled House, but allows Trump to set the table for a shutdown fight later this year.
It proposes massive cuts to domestic spending while increasing defense spending, and calls for more funding for his long-promised border wall.
The budget would also extend tax cuts, adding over $1 trillion in debt over the next four years.
Critics say the new budget does nothing to tackle the growing deficit, but the White House argues cuts to discretionary spending would offset the costs of the tax cuts.
The latest budget has a goal of balancing the budget by 2034.
“The gold star is, do we have a sustainable fiscal policy? That is to say, is your debt to [gross domestic product] GDP ratio sustainable? Is it going up, is it going down?” Bixby said. “You don’t have to have a balanced budget every year. I would say the goal here is fine. I don’t have a problem waiting that long for a balanced budget.”
