At least 8 killed in Brazil school shooting: reports

At least eight people were killed Wednesday in an elementary school shooting in Brazil, according to media reports.

Sao Paulo police said that two masked gunmen entered the school and killed at least six children as well as two school officials, according to The Associated Press. The gunmen then killed themselves, police said.

The shooting reportedly occurred at the Raul Brasil school in Suzano, Sao Paulo.

Before entering the school, the gunmen also shot and killed a worker at a nearby car wash, police told Reuters.

Marcelo Salles, commander of police forces in Sao Paulo, said Wednesday that he had “never seen anything like this” and called it “an unspeakably brutal crime.”

School shootings are rare in Brazil. Prior to Wednesday, the most recent major school shooting in the country occurred in 2011, when 12 children were killed, Reuters reported.

Sao Paulo Gov. Joao Doria said Wednesday that “our solidarity goes out to the families of the victims,” Reuters reported.

“I was shocked with the scenes I saw inside that school,” Doria added. “It is the saddest thing I have seen in my life.”
