GOP lawmaker tells party to ‘do better’ after O’Rourke St. Patrick’s Day post
Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) called on his own party leaders to “do better” after the GOP invoked former Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s (D-Texas) decades-old DWI mugshot on St. Patrick’s Day.
“Do better, @GOP,” Amash tweeted. “Be better.”
{mosads}On its official Twitter account on Sunday, the party shared a doctored version of O’Rourke’s mugshot showing him wearing a cartoon leprechaun hat and holding a placard with the message: “Please Drink Responsibly.”
“On this St. Paddy’s Day, a special message from noted Irishman Robert Francis O’Rourke,” the tweet read.
Do better, @GOP. Be better. https://t.co/FApeUSqApC

O’Rourke, who announced last week that he is jumping into the 2020 presidential race, brushed off the criticism as “pettiness,” and said that voters are not interested in “personal attacks.”
Amash, despite being a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, has not shied away from criticism of President Trump. In an interview with CNN earlier this month, Amash said that he has considered leaving the caucus at times because he is “disenchanted” by its unflinching support of Trump.
The Michigan Republican has also not ruled out seeking the Libertarian Party’s nomination for the presidency in 2020.
