Pollster Emily Ekins on Monday said on “What America’s Thinking” that the growing gap between positions on social and cultural issues could lead to an “emerging divide” among 2020 Democrats.
“I think we’re seeing kind of an emerging divide within the Democratic Party,” Ekins, polling director at the Cato Institute, told Hill.TV’s Jamal Simmons.
“The more liberal Democrats are moving to the left on a lot of these issues about identity, race, culture, immigration,” she continued. “The more conservative Democrats, who might have represented kind of the median Democrat ten years ago, are finding themselves kind of further and further away.”
“We’re going to see this play out in the Democratic primaries,” she said. “I just think across all of these different issues, we’re going to see this kind of divide come about between the Democrats, the more conservative and more liberal Democrats, on a lot of these issues.”
Democrats hope that swing states such as Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania are in play in 2020 after President Trump was able to flip them from blue to red in 2016.
Trump was able to appeal to independents and some working-class Democrats, who said they felt alienated from the Democratic Party in 2016.
