Outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Sunday she would be staying on until Wednesday, April 10, to ensure an “orderly transition.”

“I have agreed to stay on as Secretary through Wednesday, April 10th to assist with an orderly transition and ensure that key [Department of Homeland Security] DHS missions are not impacted,” Nielsen tweeted hours after President Trump announced her departure from the agency.

Trump announced on Twitter earlier Sunday that Nielsen would be leaving her role at DHS, where she implemented the president’s hard-line immigration policies.{mosads}

Trump tweeted that Kevin McAleenan, the commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, will lead the DHS on an acting basis.

In her resignation note earlier Sunday, Nielsen had said her departure from the agency was effective April 7.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request to explain the change in Nielsen’s departure date.
