Democratic lawmaker quotes ‘Real Housewives’ during Trump critique
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) quoted a line from the “Real Housewives” franchise in an effort to criticize former President Trump during a Wednesday House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing.
“And what do we have as Democrats? We have receipts, proof, a timeline, screenshots. We have everything we need to prove conclusively that foreign governments are funneling money through Trump properties and into Donald Trump’s pockets, all in violation of the Constitution,” Garcia said.
The California Democrat was invoking Heather Gay, a cast member on the “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,” who made similar comments about having various forms of proof while calling out a co-star during the recent season finale.
Garcia’s comments went viral, sparking memes and a shoutout from Real Housewives host and producer Andy Cohen.
“This is either a brilliant and stunning call back to the Salt Lake City Housewives that has fully blown my mind, or he’s just angling for a 20 percent off coupon to Beauty Lab and Laser,” Cohen said, referencing Gay’s company.
Garcia responded to Cohen’s shoutout, saying he has “been a @BravoTV gay since the original OC housewives franchise. Honored to be the first member of congress to quote a housewife in the congressional record.”
Garcia and other members of the House were gathered for a hearing focused on Hunter Biden, the president’s son, and his foreign business dealings. Democrats claimed Republicans care about the president’s son’s business dealings but turn a blind eye when it comes to Trump.
Democrats on the committee released a report last week that found Trump received millions from foreign entities while in the White House. The report found Trump took at least $7.8 million from foreign entities in 20 countries in payments to businesses. About $5.6 million came from China and went to his hotels in the District of Columbia and Las Vegas, and Trump Tower in New York.
The report noted that receiving the payments could violate a constitutional prohibition on accepting funding from foreign governments.
