Portland Trail Blazers fans pledge Alabama abortion access fund donations for each point scored

Portland Trail Blazers fans pledged to donate a dollar for each point the team scored against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday to a fund that provides women in Alabama with access to abortions.

According to the Willamette Week, the effort began with Hannah Carmody on Twitter earlier this week.

Carmody, a Blazers fan, took to Twitter to announce that she would be donating $1 to the Yellowhammer Fund for each point her team scored during its Thursday game. On its website, the Yellowhammer Fund said it provides funding to anyone seeking care at the three abortion clinics in Alabama.{mosads}

And not long after sharing her tweet on Wednesday, a number of other fans followed suit.

The campaign comes after Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) signed legislation this week banning nearly all abortions in the state, including in cases of incest or rape.

Under the law, which has not yet taken effect, doctors could face a maximum punishment of up to 99 years for performing the procedure.

Ivey has acknowledged that the law is “unenforceable” but some backers hope the legislation will lead to a legal fight that could eventually challenge Roe v. Wade.

The Blazers scored 111 points in a loss to the Warriors on Thursday night.
